Canberra, 1 February 2012, Art Media Agency (AMA).

The Australian authorities are carrying out an enquiry about the theft of a piece of Aboriginal art, which was allegedly then put up for auction on eBay. The piece was later taken down from the site after there was a warning from the website that the piece may have been stolen.

The person who had registered the piece on the site had done so under a false identity. Jenny Thomas, head of communication at eBay Australia, stated that the site would help the authorities to carry out their enquiries. She added that ”If you do provide false information when you register on eBay, you will be very quickly found out because it is a very traceable situation. Anyone thinking of attempting to sell a stolen item on the site would be very foolish.”
