TRENTON - After being displayed at the Trenton City Museum for more than a year, a rare ceramic vase manufactured in the city more than 100 years ago was carefully packed for its return to Brooklyn Tuesday.

The vase, one of four crafted by the old Trenton Potteries Co. for the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904, had been on loan to the city from the Brooklyn Museum. But the New York museum asked for the vase back last month after the city laid off Ellarslie's full-time director in September.

"The return of the vase was requested because of concerns over its safety and security," Brooklyn Museum spokeswoman Sally Williams said.

Brian Hill, the director of the Trenton City Museum for more than 10 years, was one of about 150 employees laid off in September as part of a citywide workforce reduction. The city has installed an intern in his place.
