SACRAMENTO, CA - Two former Sacramento library and security staff and the wife of one of them have been sentenced to prison and face possible restitution for defrauding the city of $780,000.

Ex-library facilities superintendent Dennis Nilsson was given 14 years, eight months behind bars for 16 counts of grand theft, bribery and conflict of interest. Ex-head of security James Mayle was sentenced to five years, four months, and his wife, Janie Rankins-Mayle, six years, for grand theft and bribery convictions.

According to the Sacramento County district attorney, independent contractors who performed work for the Sacramento Public Library Authority were directed to submit bills for their work to two companies, All City Maintenance and Hagginwood Services Inc. formed by Mayle and Rankins-Mayle. The latter then inflated those charges and sent invoices to Nilsson for payment under her own letterhead. Nilsson knew about the arrangement and approved the charges.

Prosecutors presented evidence showing between 2007 and 2007, All City Maintenance and Hagginwood Services were paid approximately $1.3 million of which just $500,000 was for legitimate services.

In addition, Nilsson was paid more than $100,000 by Mayle and Rankins-Mayle in bribes for signing off on the invoices.

A restitution hearing was set for March 2.
