Silverware worth more than £10,000 was melted down after being stolen from a Cambridge University college, a court heard.

Scott Thomas, of Mount Pleasant Walk, Castle, Cambridge, admitted 18 charges – including trying to sell the stolen silverware to an antiques dealer – when he appeared before city magistrates.

Prosecutor Paul Brown said several silver items, which had been locked in a chest, were taken from the chapel of Corpus Christi College in Trumpington Street on January 9, including chalices, patens (small plates) and a ciborium (covered cup).

He said: “An antique dealer met Mr Thomas, who brought in three pieces of these religious silver items.

“He said he had been clearing out some items and wanted to sell them for £100. His manner was very jittery and suspicious. The antique dealer paid him £30 for them and straight away informed the police.
